  • Author: Juanvilata
  • Cover photo description:
  • The Pyrenees range extends between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coasts. The range contains high levels of biodiversity including over 200 endemic plant species. Endangered fauna includes the brown bear Ursus arctos and the lammergeier Gypaetus barbatus. Although there are still pristine habitat areas, they are threatened by tourism massification, unsustainable logging, winter resorts and road development, and dam building, amongst other impacts. The Pyrenees are also the source of numerous rivers which are a crucial source of clean freshwater, especially to the regions located to the south of the range, in drought-ridden Spain.
