- Photo title: Wetlands in a glacial valley at Fiordland national park
- Author: Juanvilata
- Cover photo description:
- Fiordland is a geographic region located in the south-western corner of New Zealand’s South Island or Te Waipounamu. A large part of it is encompassed in the vast national park of the same name. Due to its western location at the midst of the rugged Southern Alps, it captures the humidity from the Pacific ocean and thus receives large amounts of rainfall over 6,000 mm annually and reaching 8,000 mm in Milford Sound. In fact, it is deemed one of the wettest areas in the world. Part of this rainfall percolates to the ground and flows again in the form of springs, rivers, lakes and wetlands, such as this area in the flat bottom of Eglinton valley, one of a myriad glacial valleys found within the region.
