  • Photo title: The Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek
  • Author: Hsinica
  • Cover photo description:
  • The Temple is situated upon a platform made of a huge filling of massive stones. The photo looks back at the Great Courtyard from the Temple platform. The structure at the centre is the great altar. Remains of a smaller altar is in front. This towering altar, dating from the beginning of the 1st century AD, was probably built to allow the worshipers to view the proceedings on the lower altar from the top. It was flanked by two pools for ritual washing. Remains of the rectangular pool on the right is visible. These structures were destroyed when a Christian basilica was built on the site at the end of the 4th century.
