  • The synagogue at Capernaum is a fantastic structure of white stone and ornate columns, probably built in the late third or fourth century AD. Below its foundation, archaeologists have discovered basalt walls of a previous synagogue dating to the first century AD. Many scholars attribute this synagogue to the original structure built by the Roman centurion stationed there Luke 7:3-5. The synagogue is on the shore of the Sea of Galilee at the ancient fishing village of Capernaum. It’s here where Jesus taught “as one who had authority, and not as the scribes” Mark 1:21. The synagogue at Capernaum is also where Jesus was confronted by a demoniac while teaching Mark 1:21-27, Jesus healed the servant of the centurion Luke 7:3, and Jesus gave his sermon on the bread of life John 6:35-59.
