Senegal Parrot with banana on a blue background. The Senegal parrot Poicephalus senegalus is a parrot that is a resident breeder across a wide range of west Africa. It makes migrations within West Africa, according to the availability of the fruit, seeds and blossoms which make up its diet. It is considered a farm pest in Africa, often feeding on maize or millet. It is popular in aviculture. With nesting grounds found commonly all over the West African continent, the Senegal parrot is a common bird in the wild, as well as in captivity. They flock in savannahs, oil palm groves, and open woodland areas, and are always close to a freshwater source. They are easily recognized in the wild, due to their noisy chattering with whistles and caws as they roost. They are quite small compared to other parrots, with an average size reaching 9 inches 23 centimeters and a weight of 6 ounces 170 grams. A distinguishing trait is their slightly oversized head and beak, which both seem a bit large when compared to the rest of their body. Even though there are no general differences between the sexes, the males sometimes tend to grow larger and heavier than the female birds.
