  • Cover photo description:
  • In 1762, Ajuda became part of the Municipality of Lisbon, thus ceasing to be a suburban town. The parish was at the time a cluster of houses, farms, quarries, lime kilns and mills. In 1768, the Marquis of Pombal installed the Botanical Garden in Horta da Quinta de Cima. It was also around that time, between 1766 and 1787, that Pina Manique had the Ajuda Cemetery built, where the servants of the Royal House were buried. The Real Barraca that had once been the residence of the royal family was replaced by a huge palace - the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda. The works began in 1795, but had to be interrupted due to the French Invasions, which forced the royal family to flee to Brazil. It was completed in the mid-19th century, having been the residence of King D. Carlos.
