  • When Golden Gate Park was first being built, in 1871, they started at the beach and what is today the Great Highway working their way east. All of that land was just shifting sand dunes, which made their work slower and harder. Until they got up to what is now the corner of Fulton and Stanyan Streets in the very Northeast portion of the main part of the park. There was a grove of Native Coast Live Oak trees, Quercus agrifolia, that is found no where else, but two other parks in the City, the Presidio, and Buena Vista, which is actually older than Golden Gate Park itself. This, approximately fifty acres were incorporated into the just over 1,000 acres of the park. Unfortunately, there was a period when the trees were cut for fuel, but not completely. They are now being allowed to grow back to their former splendor. As witnessed 9 March 2022.
