  • It is always a marvel to me to see these insects in a field. This is a clearwing hummingbird moth. You can tell it is not the snowberry variety since it has has the reds and oranges on it's body. The other is black and yellow like a bumblebee. It is often confused with a hawk moth or a sphinx moth. This is the first year I ever remember encountering these. To me, this almost looks like a flying lobster by the look of their tail. This one's pretty green body with what looks to be fur. The see-thru wings is what helps to give them their name. I really love the antennas on these guys and the way their legs hang down as they fly. This picture was taken in the East Coventry township nature preserve close to Pottstown in Pennsylvania.
