The Carpinteria California beach is one place where a tar pit exists. Walking by one of the rocks, you might notice mushrooms growing out of the thick, tar encrusted rock. On closer look, you realize it is the bladder of the sea kelp, the one part that is not eatable. The kelp is very nutritious, but not the bladder.
