- Tartary buckwheat scientific name: Fagopyrum tataricum L. Gaertn. is a plant of the Polygonaceae, buckwheat genus. Annual herb. Stems erect, 30-70 cm high, branched, green or slightly purple, with thin longitudinal edges, one side with papillary protrusions, leaves broadly triangular, 2-7 cm long. Inflorescence racemose, terminal or axillary, flowers sparsely arranged; bracts ovate, 2-3 mm long, with 2-4 flowers in each bract, with joints in the middle of pedicel. Achenes long ovate, 5-6 mm long, with 3 edges and 3 longitudinal grooves, the upper part is sharp, the lower part is obtuse sometimes with wavy teeth, dark brown, dull, longer than persistent perianth. Flowering June-September, fruiting August-October. In China, it is cultivated and sometimes wild in the mountains of northeast, north, northwest and southwest China. It grows on the fields, roadsides, hillsides and river valleys at an altitude of 500-3900 meters. Seeds are eaten or used as fodder. The root is used for medicinal purposes, regulating Qi and relieving pain, strengthening the spleen and removing dampness.
