- Photo title: Fontana dei Vacchero - Genova
- Author: Sandraipswich
- Cover photo description:
- The column was erected in memory of the betrayal of Giulio Cesare Vachero , a Genoese adventurer who in 1628 took part in a conspiracy against the oligarchic republic of Genoa in favor of the Savoy who wanted to take over the Ligurian territory. The conspirators were discovered on March 31, 1628 and executed on May 31 of the same year. The main exponent of the revolt, Vachero, had the house razed to the ground and the `Infamous Column` was erected in his place. To hide it, his descendants in 1644 obtained the opportunity to build a large fountain at the entrance to Piazza Vachero, the small open space along Via del Campo created with the demolition of the conspirator`s house.
