- This is a Mydidae family fly. This is a worldwide family, primarily tropical subtropical. There are 63 genera and 471 species described in this family. Common name: Mydas flies. Large flies (often wasp mimics) with prominent, clubbed antennae and distinctive wing venation. The hind leg is much longer and stronger than both the middle leg and the fore leg and the hind femur is usually swollen and bears ventral spines. Observed near Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR), Petén department, Guatemala.
