- Herman is a 12-year-old 41-pound male African Spurred Tortoise (Geochelone sulcata). His buddy Buster is 8 years old and 21 pounds. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, Sulcata tortoises have been captive bred in the United States as exotic pets since the 1980s. With an estimated lifespan in captivity of 150 years, and a potential for females to grow to 150 pounds, and males to grow up to 200 pounds, it is the worlds third largest tortoise species, exceeded only by the Galapagos tortoise (up to 450 pounds) and Aldabra tortoise (up to 700 pounds).
