  • Author: Lindalombardo
  • Cover photo description:
  • Male Downy Woodpeckers have the characteristic red spot on the backs of their heads. Otherwise, they are a crisp black and white bird known for tapping on trees and other woods for their favorite food: insects. This woodpecker is holding onto the trunk of a Maple tree. Another woodpecker has made holes in the tree's trunk and sap is running freely down the bark. Rather than tapping, this woodpecker was enjoying the sap of the Maple tree. With its black beak, white breast and spotted wing feathers, it's one of the most attractive birds found in most neighborhoods.
