  • VERWORT SEXUAL REPRODUCTION--Archegoniophores & x28;the stalked umbrella-shaped structures& x29; which have many Archegonia, each one of which contains an egg. These are female gametophyte & x28;gamete producing& x29; plants. Male plants have antheridia that produce sperm which can be dispersed to female plants via rain drops & x28;splash mechanism& x29;. With moist conditions the sperm swim into the archegonia and fertilize the egg--this fertilized egg develops into a sporophyte that produces asexual spores that can produce new liverwort plants. This is alternation of generations--the gametophyte & x28;gamete producing plants& x29; alternating with a sporophyte & x28;spore producing plant& x29;. This species grows well in greenhouses, and is found on soil or wet rocks in nature. Indonesian
