  • Pictured is a marble statue of Saint George by Ottaviano Lazzerini in the main altar of the Church of San Biagio in Montepulciano, Italy. It is one of four statues Lazzerini completed for the main altar in 1584. The most famous legend associated with Saint George is his encounter with a ferocious dragon. According to the story, a dragon terrorized a city and demanded human sacrifices, and the princess of the city was about to be offered to the beast. George valiantly rode out to confront the dragon, slaying it with his lance and saving the princess. Despite his heroic deeds, George was eventually arrested, tortured, and executed for his refusal to renounce his Christian faith. He was beheaded on April 23, 303 AD, in Nicomedia.
