Although in uses since ancient times,it was the arrival of steam power that finally enabled them to uses heavier weights,to move up and down faster and smoother. The opening is to allow passage of ship traffic underneath. This bridge was designed by Joseph Strauss,who went on to design and build the Golden Gate Bridge. Named for San Francisco native and famed baseball player,Francis Joseph `Lefty` O`Doul,his restaurant is still open and popular. As seen 26 December 2017.
