It occasionally makes its way into the aquarium trade. It grows to a maximum length of 54 cm in but 35 cm in is a more usual size. This surgeonfish has a widespread distribution in the tropical and sub-tropical Indian Ocean and the West Pacific Ocean. Its range extends from East Africa to southern Japan, Indonesia and eastern Australia, at depths down to about 130 m
