  • Cover photo description:
  • The Zascol peak (1496 m) is the most prominent in terms of allure and at the same time the most picturesque, being the culmination of a limestone klippe of the summit of the Cernei Mountains, caught in the surrounding relief dominated by shale. The Cernei Mountains are a mountain group of the Retezat-Godeanu Mountains belonging to the Southern Carpathian mountain range. The highest peak is Varful Dobrii, with 1,928 m. They are bordered to the South-East by the Cernei Valley, to the West by the Caransebes-Mehadia Depression, to the North by the Raului Rece Valley, to the North-East by the Olanului Valley. The Cernei Mountains are located in the southwestern part of the Retezat-Godeanu Mountains, being composed of two main peaks: the Vlascu Hill, with a length of about 40 km and the Cornereva Hill (Canicea Hill), with a length of about 15 km. Their structure is similar to that of the Godeanu Mountains, with several ridges emerging from the ridge that descend to the east, into the Cernei Valley (Plaiul Vuc, Burba and Oplesata, Plaiul Gastii) and to the North towards the Cornereva Depression (La Lac and Piatra lui Manta, Sulita, Cozia).
