- Photo title: The Dalmatian pelican
- Author: Biserko
- Cover photo description:
- The Dalmatian pelican (lat. Pelecanus crispus) is the largest pelican species. It breeds in the Balkans, Asia Minor, Levant, Ukraine, southern Russia, all the way to Mongolia and China. It inhabits swamps and lake shores. The first scientific description of this species was made by the German ornithologist Carl Friedrich Bruch in 1832 based on a specimen caught on the Neretva. Eggs are preserved in the Vienna Museum of Natural History, which today are the only evidence that this bird nested in the Neretva river valley.
