  • Cover photo description:
  • This sculpture illustrates one of the allegoric themes, which is one of the Alexandrian creations and contributions to Hellenistic art. It represents the deification of Paulina, Hadrian's sister, with two cow horns, symbolizing Isis. Paulina accompanied the emperor on the Egyptian trip in 130 AD, and like his friend Antinoos, she died there, both to be deified later. The sculpture imitates the Ptolemaic models, that depicted Arsinoe-Isis-Selene with two small horns. Art was a promising medium of political propaganda: since Osiris married his sibling, Isis, likewise the marriage of Arisnoe and Ptolemy II was sacred. Antinoos was revered as Osiris-Antinoos, and likewise, Paulina was deified as Isis-Selene.
