- Photo title: Niche with a statue, Ostia Antica, Italy
- Author: 2circles
- Cover photo description:
- It is thought Ostia Antica, at the mouth of the river Tiber, was founded in about 335 BC as one of the very first Roman colonies. To the south-east of the Forum is Portico. It was built at the end of the reign of Hadrian (117-138 AD). Behind a long row of granite columns is a brick back wall. A statue of a man wearing a toga (the head is lost) is in a large niche in the centre of the back wall.
