  • Author: Nletson1
  • Cover photo description:
  • The image shows a large pyramid-shaped hill that has been partly unearthed on the north side of the main Plaza at Altun Ha, located in the Belize District (Belize). Some of the steps in the middle can be seen. The top of the hill has some traces of rooms and hallways. The entrance is on the east side. Altun Ha was a significant site for the Maya civilization during the Classic Period (200-900 A.D.). It was near the Caribbean Sea and connected the inland regions and the Highlands with the maritime trade networks that extended along and beyond the Yucatan Peninsula. Archaeologists have found many rare and valuable objects here, including the biggest jade piece ever discovered in the Maya territory.
