- Cover photo description:
- Slatina Monastery is located about 28 km north-west of the town of Falticeni,in a wooded area at the foot of the Stanisoarei Mountains,in the valley of the Suha Mica stream. The name Slatina Monastery comes from a nearby salt water spring (slatina),which dried up over time. The history of the construction of the monastery is lost in the mists of time. Legends say that there lived here a hermit named Pahomie who would have advised the ruler Lapusneanu to build a monastery on the place where a paltin grew. Until then, the hermit was in a small wooden church. The founder of the Slatina Monastery was Alexandru Lapusneanu, ruler of Moldavia (1552-1561,1564-1568). The chronicler Eftimie, who later became bishop of Radautilor (1558-1561),wrote a Chronicle in Slavonic, whose main figure is Alexandru Lapusneanu. He wrote that the building of the monastery was begun in 1553 and completed in the second reign of Lapusneanu,in 1564. The ruler would have been led to this place by the hermit Pahomie. He appointed as the first abbot Iacob, also known as Molodet, the worthy one.
