  • Sign on Memorial to Indian Republic Day in 1950 and subsequently Goan Independence from Portugal in 1968 in Garcia de Orta or Municipal Garden, Panaji, Goa, India. "The four Asiatic lions atop this pillar standing back to back mounted on a circular abacus with a frieze. Carving sculptures of high relief of an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull and a lion separated by intervening Dharmachakra or Ashoka Chakra wheels over a bell shaped lotus is the emblem of India. The column is in Tuscan style with a plain cylindrical cask and has a height of 12 meters and 76 inches, not counting the lions. The four lions symbolizes Power, Courage, Pride and Confidence, It was adopted as the National Emblem of India on 26th January, 1950 the day India, became a Republic. The lions replaced the bust of Vasco da Gama on this pillar in this garden Garcia de Orta or Municipal Garden in the year 1968 after Goa was liberated from the Portuguese rule."
