It is also known as the Ismenius tiger or tiger heliconian and is most commonly called the tiger-striped long wing butterfly. Heliconium ismenius resembles a number of other butterflies, which all share the trait of being toxic and unpalatable and by looking alike they mutually advertise this protective trait, thereby increasing its recognition among predators. This is an example of Mullerian mimicry.
