  • Photo title: Statue of Primavera on the bridge Ponte Santa Trinita seen against blue sky, Florence, Italy
  • Author: Wereld
  • Cover photo description:
  • The sculpture executed by Pietro Francavilla is one of the four sculptures personifying seasons of the year, flanking the bridge on both banks of the river. Primavera (which means spring in Italian) was accidentally beheaded at the time of the Nazi occupation of Florence during World War II, when the Nazis blew up the bridge Ponte Santa Trinita alongside other Florentine bridges to prevent the advance of the Allies. The head of Primavera was found by labourers excavating sand from the river bottom in 1961 and the sculptures was restored to its rightful place.
