- Photo title: Collin P. Kelly Jr Street San Francisco 4
- Author: Peachpappa
- Cover photo description:
- What is today Collin P. Kelly Jr Street in San Francisco was originally named Japan Street when the Pacific Steamship Mail Company was doing active business here in the 1870s. Since they had business in Japan at the time, they named it in honor of that trade. With the sudden and surprise attack by Japan on Pear Harbor in 1941, anything with a Japanese connection suddenly had a very bad connotation, the street was quickly renamed Collin P. Kelly Jr in honor of the first US aviator to sink a Japanese warship. Note too the bronze plaques showing the original shoreline, in 1857. As seen 1 May 2024.
