  • Cover photo description:
  • The dining-room of Triclinium of the Roman House of Neptune and Amphitrite in the destroyed city of Herculaneum. In this room there is the Nymphaeum, a grotto with a natural water supply dedicated to the nymphs. The niche is decorated with hunting scenes with dogs and deer composed of glass paste mosaics and surmounted by the head of Silenus. Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town destroyed by volcanic pyroclastic flows in 79 A.D., located in the territory of today's commune of Ercolano in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.
