- Cover photo description:
- The art of Guilt Lacquer or Lai Rod Nam, is a well-known from of decorative art. It appears on book cabinets that are used to hold Buddhist scriptures. The stories the decoration depicts usually concern religious topics such as the lives of Buddha, including exquisite additional details such as human figures, animals, tree, rocks, devas, kinnaras, and flamme-like vegetalmotifs. The art might have originated during the early Ayuddhaya period. Earliest extant evidence, however, comprises only book cabinets of the rate Ayuddhaya period. In addition, this decorative art is used for utensils for the royal household and monks'residence. Most Ratanakosin gilt lacquers are found on door panels in many ubosots and viharas. The beauty and value of the art of gilt lacquer decoration on book cabinets and boxes for the Holy Scriptures can now be appreciated at the National Museum, and at the special collection of book cabinets at the National Library at Wasukree Royal Pier.
