The temple was built by order of Emperor Alexander III in 1883-1907 years on the joint project of the architect Alfred Parland and Archimandrite Ignatius (Malyshev), who later withdrew from the building. The project was implemented in the Russian style, somewhat reminiscent of Moscows St. Basils Cathedral. The construction lasted for 24 years. August 19, 1907, the cathedral was consecrated.
