  • Cover photo description:
  • The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is found across Eurasia and parts of North Africa. This woodpecker is mainly resident unless the conifer cone crop in the north of its range fails, but the tendency of some birds to wander widely means that it has recently recolonised Ireland and is a rare visitor to North America. Its plumage is pied black and white with red on the lower belly. Males and young birds also have red patches on the neck or head. Great spotted woodpeckers chisel into trees to find food items or excavate nest holes, and also drum for contact and territorial advertisement; they have anatomical adaptations to manage the physical stresses from the hammering action.
