  • View of the Alcazaba from Torres Bermejas (fortress in Mauror hill opposite the Alhambra in Granada) Stresses the Torre de la Vela, which is larger tower and symbolic of the Alhambra. It has a square of 16 m. side and 26.80 m. high. It has four floors and a ground floor with silo and dungeon. It was embattled but in 1522 the battlements were destroyed by an earthquake. It was topped by a bell used by the Arabs to announce disasters. From its privileged position a large expanse of territory, all the Vega of Granada, summits, neighborhoods, etc. dominates and it was instrumental in the defense and surveillance. Christians later used to strike the hours and later to announce to the tenants of the time they could irrigate their fields. Here the Spanish flag was placed on January 2, 1492 at 3 pm.
