- Author: Bogdan
- Cover photo description:
- As a symbol of the Hungary's Christian and Catholic identity in a region where the Muslim and the orthodox were strong presences, it is dedicated to St. Stephen (975-1038) the ruler who converted the Magyar tribes to Christianity and managed to create the identity of Hungary. The church has a gestation period of over 50 years, between 1851 and 1906 and it the work of 3 architects. The initial plans were to build a large Neoclassical basilica along the lines of Hungary's great basilica at Eszergom, but Miklos Ybl, the second architect gave it a more flamboyant, neo-Renaissance style.
