Padstow also has historic significance as a busy trading port from the earliest times and Welsh and Irish saints landed here in the Dark Ages. The local church, shared by Catholics and Protestants alike, takes its name from St Petroc who founded a monastery there in the 6th century AD and stayed for 30 years.
