  • Cover photo description:
  • Here we see the geological feature of a raised beach. In the foreground we see todays beach which is made up of a range of pebbles of different sizes and shapes, all smoothed by the constant movement of the sea. On the strandline we see seaweed which has been left by the tide. Further back we see a line of grasses and other plants. Then we come to the section of embankment which contains the raised beaches. Part way up the embankment we see a deep section of pebbles in the sand. These are poorly sorted – with a mix of sizes of pebbles mixed up in the layer. This is the first raised beach. Above this raised beach is a layer of sand which, if you look closely contains further layering. On the right of the picture we see another two thin layers of very small pebbles – possibly the remains of another raised beach. This is all covered by a layer of grasses and plants. This was photographed on a beach at Meikle Ferry, North, in Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland.
