- Photo title: Martinique, Fort-de-France: Schœlcher Library
- Author: Maijaliisa
- Cover photo description:
- On the initiative of Victor Schœlcher the entire library was built in France in 1889 for the Paris World Exhibition, then dismantled, and shipped - piece by piece - to Martinique, there reassembled. The library, an avant-garde building for its period, was designed by French architect Henri Picq who combined different materials - concrete, wrought iron and wood - to overcome the hazards of the swampy land of the town of Fort-de-France. The Schœlcher library has been a scheduled historical monument since 1973.
