  • The art deco Griffith Observatory is located on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood, in Griffith Park. It is named after Griffith J. Griffith, who was born in Wales, on January 4, 1850 and emigrated to the United States in 1865. Construction of the observatory began in 1933, using a design developed by architect John C. Austin based on sketches by Russell W. Porter. The observatory was opened to the public in 1935, closed in 2002 for renovation, and reopened in 2006.
