- Forbidden City (Gugong) was the imperial palace of the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. The palace is situated just north of Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, China. 24 emperors have ruled China from the Forbidden City since its inauguration in 1421 until the Qing Dynasty was overthrown in 1911.
