The city is situated on both banks of the Oka river and its tributary, the river Acence, 160 km from Moscow. The city has an international airport `Kaluga`. In Kaluga from 1892 to 1935 there lived and worked for a prominent inventor, theorist of cosmonautics after K. E. Tsiolkovsky. In 1967, a Museum of the history of cosmonautics, the world`s first and Russia`s largest space Museum, created with the direct participation of Sergey Korolev and Yuri Gagarin.
