  • Cover photo description:
  • Pediment on the rear of the Amsterdam Royal Palace on Dam Square. Seated at the centre is a personification of Amsterdam on the side of a ship. At her feet is a globe. Various figures and animals are depicted around her. Four of the figures are personifications of the continents of the known world at that time: Europe, Africa, Asia and America. Amsterdam traded with all the these continents. Each bears a gift in homage to Amsterdam. Triangular clay relief model was made in around 1655 by the Antwerp sculptor Artus Quellinus.
