  • Final felling, ie regeneration felling, is the last stage of periodic silviculture and at the same time the beginning of reforestation. Final felling is the last of the regeneration fellings, ie the one in which the old trees are completely or almost completely removed. In the final felling, the trees that have grown to a mature age will be harvested. Types of final felling include open felling, seed felling and hedge felling. In open felling, all or almost all the trees are felled from the forest. The forest is then sown or replanted. In seed tree felling, 50–150 seed trees are left per hectare, from the seeds of which a new forest is to emerge naturally after felling. In the shelter tree felling, 200-400 shelter trees are left per hectare to protect the seedlings from the sun. Shelter felling is used in spruce forests if spruce is to continue to be grown. 95% of Finland's commercial forests are certified with the Finnish PRFC certificate, which is part of the PEFC system. PEFC forest certification requires 5-10 trees not to be felled for each open hectare. Saving trees must never be taken out of the forest.
