  • History of the lightships `Irbene` begins in the 1950-ies. With the growing number and tonnage entering the Gulf of Riga commercial vessels the reefs, banks and shoals Irben Strait has represented a growing threat to the safety of navigation. The Soviet government faced a choice – to improve the navigation of the Strait dangerous equipment or increase the costs of freight and insurance of vessels. In the late 1950s, the Soviet Union ordered Finland at the shipyard laivateollisuus the two lightships – one goes to the Caspian sea and replaces the floating beacon `Astrakhan receiving` still pre-revolutionary construction, and the second, `Irbe` in 1962 is set at the starting point North of the channel in the Irbe Strait.
