  • Cover photo description:
  • Agasthya Malai, or Agasthyakoodam, is in the southern end of the Western Ghats of south India. This mountain range known as the Ashambu hills forms a natural border between Tamilnadu and Kerala states. There are over 25 peaks in this range of which Agasthyakoodam is the tallest, towering above 1868m. Some of these peaks are shown in the photograph. The tallest peak of Agasthyamalai is to the left. The forests around these hills are famous for the rare medicinal herbs and plants. Far from human settlements, this area has a rich biodiversity, is rich in flora and fauna and is one of the most pristine natural forests in Kerala. The trek to the peak takes one through varied terrain; moist deciduous forest, semi evergreen forest, grassland and dense evergreen forest. The final stretch involves a steep rock climb to reach the peak.
