It is a large solitary palm, 10–20 m 33–66 ft tall, occasionally growing to 40 m 131 ft. The leaves are pinnate. Native to the Canary Islands, it has been naturalised in many subtropical climates including southern Italy. The palm pictured is growing in the Masseria Torre Coccaro, a 5 star luxury resort in Puglia, Italy. It is also commonly called the palmera canaria and is the natural symbol of the Canary Islands.
