Cover photo info
- Photo title: Namibia`s Lake Otjikoto sinkhole
- Author: Gmorganec
- Cover photo description:
- Resembling the Great Hole of Kimberley, albeit on a much smaller scale, this lake formed when subsurface erosion caused the underlying rock formation to collapse until it struck a firm foundation. The base was sealed there, creating an ideal situation for water to gather. As the base was below the level of the natural water table, water seeped in and continues to keep the level constant. In WW1, when South African forces invaded then - German South west Africa, the German command chose to throw all their arms and ammunition, including cannons, into the hope rather then surrender them. Included in the items thrown in was a locked safe. It has never been opened or recovered.
