- Photo title: Elizabethan Garden, Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire. England
- Author: Stuartan
- Cover photo description:
- A view from the Keep doorway that leads down to the Elizabethan Garden. Here you can see the the aviary and the white marble fountain. The base of the fountain is carved with scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and on the central pedestal are two male figures – called ‘Atlantes’, and they are holding a sphere surmounted by Dudley’s heraldic emblem, a ragged staff. This garden was originally established in 1575 by Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester to woo Queen Elizabeth 1. Much of the castle was destroyed in the 1650s during the English Civil War and in later times the gatehouse was converted to a family home.
