  • Hotel Avala has the form of a medieval fortress, and two monumental statues of a sphinx attract the most attention of observers. First, at the king`s request, in 1928 according to some research in 1931, for the needs of the Ministry of Mines, Forestry and Water Management, the Avala Hotel was built, where the Russian architect Viktor Lukomski signed as the author. His most important reference before the hotel was the design of the Royal Palace complex in Dedinje co-author by architect Živojin Nikolić in the period from 1924 and 1929, while after the hotel in 1935 he designed the Patriarchate building, which is located across from the Cathedral. Common to all these projects is that they are executed in architecture dominated by the presence of Serbian medieval architecture, the so-called neo Serbian-Byzantine style, which can be seen in the use of rustic stone squares, medieval arches and portals, window openings and recognizable decoration. The author of the decorations on all the objects was another Russian, the sculptor Vladimir Zagorodnjuk.
