Cover photo info
- Photo title: Phytolacca americana
- Author: Mutiwagner
- Cover photo description:
- Known by the common name of rat grape or tincture weed, it is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Phytolaccaceae family, native to eastern North America but currently found in most temperate regions where it is sometimes an invader. Although in general it does not exceed 1 m in height, under very favorable conditions it grows up to 3 m. It has soft branches and hardened stalks from green to purple, producing black to bluish fruit clusters in late summer and autumn. Despite having edible parts, the plant produces several toxins, some of them fatal when ingested by man.
