  • Cover photo description:
  • The name of La Peña de Francia, one of the highest mountains of the Sierra de Francia, probably makes reference to the immigrants who came from France in the 11th and 12th centuries. An image of the Virgin was discovered in 1434 and a chapel was built to guard it. The Virgin of La Peña de Francia became famous and much worshipped. Some years later, the sanctuary came into the hands of the Dominican monks. The sanctuary is made up of the church and a convent of friars, as well as the exterior chapels of La Blanca, built over the cave where Simón Vela found the image of the Virgin, San Andrés and Santo Cristo. Likewise, part of the complex is the plaza with jurisdictional roll, Roll of the Convent of Our Lady of the Rock of France, an independent guesthouse from the monastery and a telecommunications repeater antenna.
